Currency
Currency, an edgy yearly hard-cover magazine, is edited and art-directed by artist Sico Carlier. It's a mash-up of traditional magazine forms in a new style, for example, Carlier mixes recent interviews with some that are decades old, and he combines photography and line drawing. Don't expect to figure out who wrote what, or even what is an advertisement, and what is editorial. This is a magazine that breaks all boundaries.
Sico Carlier's text- and collage-based works have been displayed in places like the legendary Gracie Mansion Gallery (New York), Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco), Pineal Eye (London), Torch (Amsterdam) and Lagerfeld Gallery (Paris).
His printed matter is part of the collection of the MOMA New York. Art directional inserts in publications like Zingmagazine (New York) and Butt magazine (Amsterdam), Suite (Barcelona) and Blue (Sydney) and have been praised by I-D and Dazed and Confused.
Change is good, the graphic design team, is based in Paris and among their clients are Libération, Centre Pompidou, Musée Jeu de Paume, Vedett, Palais de Tokyo and A.P.C.
I believe this is an act of a self assured criminal -famous Japanese art director & designer Hideki Nakajima recommends five publications to the readers of Esquire Japan- and your Currency is one of them. So you should feel good about it. I find the title Currency quite witty, not to mention the fresh visuals, the articles are also interesting enough to make this magazine attractive. The magazine features many interviews, old and new interviews with the same person are mixed up, or it is not clear where an interview begins sometimes. It's pretty confusing in amusing way.
