Gaudí. The Construction of Dreams
The Construction of Dreams, the last book that Jan Molema has dedicated to Gaudí, is a serious, rigorous and well documented publication, resulting from many years of careful research about the what and why of Gaudí.
Molema is a key figure for the interpretation of Gaudí's work, as well as for its diffusion and internationalization. Molema's fascination with the work of Gaudí led him to the analysis of the mechanics, the structure and the building methods of his buildings. In the days when the official Art History, and even the Architectural History considered Gaudí as a rara avis with no connection with the modern movements and as an isolated artistic phenomena, Molema decided to penetrate in the most profound of his architecture, to discover the ultimate reason of his forms, that always respond to functional principles based on calculation and analysis, and result in the special geometry.
This passion, nearly an obsession, led him to dedicate his doctoral thesis to Gaudí in 1987. Before that he founded the Gaudí-groep in Delft in '75 and in '78 published the first of the three editions of Gaudí, 'rationalist met perfecte materiaalbeheersing', a decisive book that decisively changed the focus of the research of Gaudí's work, opening a path followed since then by many specialists and enriched in recent years with the tools offered by new technologies for analysis that allow to discover the ever more interesting invisible Gaudí.

La construcción de los sueños, el último libro que Jan Molema ha consagrado a Gaudí, es una publicación seria, rigurosa, bien documentada, fruto de muchos años de disquisiciones y estudio sobre el qué y el por qué de Gaudí.
No en balde, Molema es un personaje clave tanto en la interpretación de la obra de Gaudí, como en su divulgación e internacionalización. Ello se debe a una fascinación que se inició hace más de treinta años y que le ha llevado a analizar mecánica, estructural y constructivamente sus edificios. Cuando la historia del arte, e incluso la historia de la arquitectura, consideraba a Gaudí como un rara avis desvinculado de los movimientos modernos y como un fenómeno artístico aislado, Molema decidió penetrar en lo más profundo de su arquitectura, para descubrir la razón de ser de sus formas, que siempre responden a unos principios funcionales basados en el cálculo y la reflexión y que desarrollan una geometría particular.
Esta pasión, casi obsesión, le llevó a dedicar en 1987 su tesis doctoral a Gaudí, después de haber fundado en 1975 el Gaudí-groep Delft y de promover en 1978 la primera de tres ediciones del libro Gaudí, rationalist met perfecte materiaalbeheersing, decisivo porque cambió el rumbo de las investigaciones gaudinianas, abriendo una vía que han seguido otros especialistas y que se ha visto enriquecida por los sistemas de representación que permite la informática, que tanto nos ha ayudado a esclarecer el Gaudí invisible, tanto o más interesante que el visible.
