Rotterdam Open Cityurban area development in practice

Area development is the comprehensive approach aimed at improvement at all levels: physical, social, economic and cultural. Cooperation is essential to the successful implementation of area development, because the municipality will not be able to manage it by itself. It is therefore open to contributions from others.
Never before has area development been deployed at such a scale in an inner-urban area as in Rotterdam. In this way this city is paying a pioneer role. Rotterdam must become both an economically strong and attractive residential city. This is the ambition of the Municipal Executive laid down in the Rotterdam Urban Vision 2030.
To realise this ambition, thirteen Very Important Project Areas have been designated in the Urban Vision to initiate processes at a faster pace. The common denominator of the ten VIP Areas described in this publication is 'area development'.
This book is a compilation of first experiences in the field of the learning process of area development. How advanced is the large-scale new approach? What are its first results? What is the opinion of the parties involved about this new working method?

Rotterdam Open City. Urban area development in practice offers a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes.
